Beecher Scholarship 2010

Awarded to a High School Senior residing in Greene County

Applicants must submit an article on local history

The Greene County Historical Society established the Raymond Beecher Scholarship in 2007 to honor Dr. Raymond Beecher's 90th birthday. Dr. Beecher passed away in 2008 but left behind a rich legacy. Dr. Beecher authored several books on local history including Letters for a Revolution, Under Three Flags, Out to Greenville and Kaaterskill Clove Where Nature Met Art. His final book on the Greene County Hudson River Landings will be published posthumously. Dr. Beecher also published a weekly column, Greene Gleanings in the Catskill Daily Mail, was Greene County Historian, Trustee Emeritus of the Society, Librarian Emeritus of the Society's Vedder Research Library, and the driving force behind the Society saving the Thomas Cole National Historic Site and the Jan Van Loon House in Athens.

For 2010 there will be two $500 scholarships awarded. The scholarship is available to any high school senior who resides in Greene County. The student would have to complete a project related to Greene County History. The project can be a 3-5 page article or a PowerPoint presentation. All projects must be original and written in acceptable English style. Articles should be word-processed and double-spaced. A bibliography of Work Cited page should accompany all projects. A panel of three Society Trustees will judge the project. Articles submitted may be published in the Society's Quarterly Journal. Students should submit their project to: Beecher Scholarship, GCHS, Inc., PO Box 44, Coxsackie, NY 12051. The deadline for receiving the project is May 28, 2010.

Announcement of the scholarship will be given at graduation ceremonies at the student's high school. An article may also appear in the local newspapers regarding the scholarship winner. Payment of the award will be made to the school, college or university the student attends after graduation.

To build interest, Senior English and/or Social Studies teachers might be interested in tailoring an assignment that would involve research on some aspect of local history. In addition, the application should be posted on the school's website if possible.
