July 17, 20109:30amRip Van Winkle Site"Walk & Talk" to Rip Van Winkle Site - The walk will be from the base of the old escarpment turnpike to the site of the Rip Van Winkle House and Hotel which is just under a mile. This will not be a “hike” in terms of either distance or purpose, and will progress with several halts to discuss not only the flora and fauna of the surrounding forest, but also the history of the trail itself -- which predated the presence of pioneer settlers. Participants should dress appropriately and bring suitable food and beverage, as lunch will be eaten at the RVW site, where discussion and exploration will also occur. Binoculars and bird and/or wildflower field guides are also appropriate. The “Walk & Talk” will be lead by GCHS member Jim Planck, and participants should meet at the DEC parking lot on Boggart Road at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free. The “Walk & Talk” is expected to take about 45 minutes to 1 hour going up hill, and participants should expect to arrive back at their cars by 12:30.
